INTERNET 101
Your E-mail Address:
You need an email address so visitors to your
website, your friends, relatives, and business contacts can communicate with you. You want an email address which
is not going to change, somewhat like having a telephone number which stays with you for life. Wouldn't that be
nice?
If you have a domain name registered, you have a fixed email address. If you have not registered a name, you have
a changeable email address. The email account your dialup provider included is good only as long as you keep that
provider.
Email service is an offshoot of Internet hosting. Most of these computers handle email as well as hosting. Although
email and hosting they are not they same, they both require a computer connected to Internet 24 hours a day. As
email is integrated in Unix, most Unix hosts also provide email services. Just like websites, all email address
are hosted and carry the name of the host. If your dialup provider is xyz.net, your email address will be yourname@xyz.net.
If you have a domain name registered, you become the email host and you address is now: yourname@yourcompany.com.
If your name is Jake, when you setup your email account with your dialup provider, you probably asked to use jake
as your email name only to find out that the name jake had already been taken. One of your options would have been
jake1199 because 1198 other jakes got there before you. When you register your name, you have all possible email
names available. Now you can have jake@yourcompany.com or any other name you wish. This name will not go away when
you change dialup providers. Another advantage of having your own name is that email account names are not limited
to 8 characters as most dialup email accounts are. The name length limit is usually 26 characters. You can get
very creative with the 8 character limit removed.
If you do not have a registered name and are not planning to register one, you can get a permanent lifetime email
address from any one of several sources on Internet. Netscape.com, excite.com, and mailcity.com are good examples.
To send and receive email, you login to these websites instead of using any of the other email options bundled
either with your browser or your operating system. In any case, the email account from your dialup provider is
the least desirable because it the very likely (to almost guaranteed) that you will change providers in the future.
